Increase The Size Of What You Can See On The Screen

Change Your Font Size

Change the font size in your computer's operating system or browser.


Windows

  1. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution and choose one of the following:
    - Smaller - 100% (default). This keeps text and other items at normal size.
    - Medium - 125%. This sets text and other items to 125% of normal size.
    - Larger - 150%. This sets text and other items to 150% of normal size. This option appears only if your monitor supports a resolution of at least 1200 x 900 pixels.
  2. Click Apply.and close all of your programs and then log off of Windows. This change will take effect the next time you log on.


Mac OS

Changing system fonts in Mac OS involves downloading third party software like TinkerTool to make system wide changes, including font size.


Web Browsers

Changing font size in a browser varies depending on which one you're using.


Text To Speech

Your computer can read aloud text that is printed on the screen.


Windows

Narrator is a program that comes with installed with Windows that reads what is displayed on your screen: the contents of the active window, menu options, or the text you have typed.

  1. To activate the Narrator press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. Type "Narrator" and hit Enter.
  3. A new window will appear with Narrator options as you begin to hear what is written on the screen.

Mac OS

Apple's VoiceOver is a built in screen reader that lets you interact with your Mac based on spoken descriptions.  To start VoiceOver Press Command + F5 and your computer should begin to speak the content of your screen.


Web Browsers

There are many text to speech add-ons for your web browser.


Screen Readers

There are numerous screen readers available to purchase or for free download. Wikipedia's list of screen readers can help you select an appropriate one for you and your operating system.


Increase The Size Of What You See On The Screen


Windows

  1. Choose Start, All Programs, Accssories, Ease of Access, then use the Magnifier or click the Windows button, type "magnifier" and then hit Enter.
  2. Move the mouse pointer to the part of the screen that you want to magnify.


Mac OS

  1. Turn on screen zooming by pressing Option and Apple and the asterisk (*) key at the same time.
  2. Zoom in by pressing Option and Apple and the plus (+) key at the same time and zoom out by pressing Option and Apple and the minus (-) key at the same time.
  3. Turn off screen zooming by pressing Option and Apple and the asterisk (*) key at the same time.


Web Browsers

Press Ctrl and plus (+) to zoom in. Press Ctrl and minus (-) to zoom out.


Monitor Settings

Check your monitor settings for any adjustments that may make viewing easier.
